With a strong performance presence, Cari Burdett’s passion for contemporary music and opera garnered her star reviews for the role of Baba the Turk in Stravinsky’s “The Rake’s Progress”, performed in London, England. Equally at home on stage with early music, Cari has been praised for early music operatic roles of Monteverdi and Handel.
Cari Burdett graduated from McGill University and earned her Master’s of Music Performance from the Royal Academy of Music in London, England where she studied a varied repertoire with a focus on new music, Mahler, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Elgar and Britten. Through her studies, she has earned numerous awards including the Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund, the Sir Richard Stapley Trust Award, the Adah Rogalsky Scholarship, the Anglo American Families Award, the major Van Someran - Godfrey Prize for English song and the Blythe - Buesst Opera Prize for Opera.
Over the years, Cari has had the fortune of having many pieces commissioned or created especially for her. These kinds of unique artistic relationships with composers are very important to her music and she highly values the process of creating something new, specifically when it involves collaboration. The melding of great minds!
Her most current collaborative creation stems from her debut album, Magnolia. Working with Adrian Dolan, several of the tracks, including 'Gracias a la Vida' and 'Loveliness,' have been arranged for a full orchestra. Cari has had the pleasure of performing these magnificent arrangements with the Sooke Philharmonic on Vancouver Island.
After living abroad in Jarna, Sweden, Sardinia, Italy, London, England, and Montreal, Cari was called back to the Cowichan Valley, the place she grew up. Bringing her children back home became a priority and, in order to continue sharing her music, she began Lila Music Centre in 2008. She offers private voice lessons, family music classes, improvisation classes, leads the Lila Community Choir, and hosts a multitude of workshops. This on top of raising three gorgeous children and expanding her career in performance.
As a soloist, Cari Burdett has sung with national and international orchestras, conductorsand organizations including; Ewan Edwards, Montreal, Denis Bouliane, Montreal, Edward Gardener, London England, Heiner Goebbles, London International Festival of Theatre and Almeida Opera festival, Maurice Kagel, Kagel Festival London England, Simon Bainbridge, Almeida New music Festival , London Sinfonietta, Park Lane New Composer Series with , Thomas Hyde, Hamburg Arts Festival with Shinkhansen, Group of Electronic Music Studios, Denys Bouliane, Montreal. On the island Cari has enjoyed performing with Norman Nelson, Sooke Philarmonic, Wade Noble, Vancouver Island Symphony orchestra and Duncan Frater, Cowichan Consort.
