About the Artist

Sulsameethl Deb George – My name is Sulsameethl and my English name is Deb George, and have lived in the Cowichan Valley my whole life. I’m of mixed ancestry, Cowichan, Scottish and English and believe that has given me a unique lens to see the world through. I am an educator, an artist and a social justice activist.

Sulsa’meethl is also an expert weaver. For her, weaving is a family activity, from the harvesting of cedar to the preparation of the bark for weaving. The experience of weaving is more than creating an object, it has been about the transfer of cultural knowledge between generations and shared with audiences eager to learn.

It is about connecting with the land. Sulsameethl has led workshops on cedar weaving for diverse audiences and made regalia for cultural ceremony including regalia for Quw’utsun Elders who participate in annual Elders’ gatherings.
