My background includes training in group facilitation, somatic
practices, bodywork, community conflict work, and non-profit
governance. As well as decades in men’s circles, I have also run
a group home and been a tow truck driver.
I support men on the gentle (and sometimes fierce) journey of
self-acceptance so that we can better serve the well-being of
our loved ones and the earth from a foundation of real care for
ourselves. Curiosity and gratitude together with a deep respect
and empathy for the experience of others, supports me in
helping create and sustain group spaces in which everyone’s
truth is welcome and can be safely held. I listen to the wisdom
of our hearts and bodies as intelligent guides.
Dancing, climbing, cold rivers and wet forests are how I
recharge and settle. As a father, divorcee, partner and friend to
a menagerie of animals and a few humans, my life is filled with
opportunities, challenges and gratitude.
Penny Fenske MA, RCC (ACS-provisional)
Working in private practice since 2009, in Victoria and recently
on Salt Spring Island, I offer counselling from an attachment
perspective that is emotion focused and body-based. My
education, research, and practice have focused
understanding deeply and responding compassionately while
supporting resilience in those who have experienced trauma
and relationship ruptures. When I facilitate circles, I lean on my
advanced AEDP training, in-depth group facilitation training,
attunement, somatic resonance, intuition and curiosity to
offer questions, prompts, or reflection to deepen your process
and connection to yourself and others.
When I am not engaged with my work, you will find me in my
sanctuary, the forest. I love to hike the forests, mountains, and
ocean trails with Atlas, my adopted miniature poodle/co-
therapist; tend my permaculture food forest; restore the forest
on the land where I live; split wood; do yin yoga; listen to music
that moves my soul; dance; and share time with friends and
family.
As I hold space for you, I will receive every aspect of you and
your journey with authenticity, warmth, empathy, and dignity.

The Fire Within, is a transformative program led by Stephanie MacKay and Cari Burdett. Designed for female-bodied individuals navigating the transition through (peri)menopause into Cronedom, this journey offers a space for reflection, wisdom, and community.
Over five months—including two immersive overnight gatherings on Vancouver Island—we will explore song, myth, ceremony, and creative expression to reclaim the power of this life stage. Together, we will hold space for the deep questions: Who am I becoming? How do I embrace this transition with strength and grace?

Date & Time:
Wednesday, April 30th, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Location:
Riverside space at 1350 Tzouhalem Road, Comiaken
Workshop Description:
Join us for a unique and immersive workshop, How Food and Language Connect Us to the Land, led by Indigenous Foods educator Jared / Qwustenuxun Williams. This engaging half-day experience will take participants on a journey to explore the deep connections between language, culture, and the land through the lens of traditional food practices.
During this riverside gathering, Qwustenuxun will share stories, knowledge, and insights about the Indigenous foods of the Cowichan territory, drawing from his lifelong learning with his late grandmother and over a decade of experience working in the culinary world. We’ll walk along the river, observe local food plants, and, if the right plants are available, even craft traditional tools like berry hooks or discuss the significance of Pi’qwun sticks.
This workshop offers a hands-on, reflective opportunity to consider how food security, language, and land stewardship intersect in Indigenous Food Systems — and what that means for all of us in the future.
What to Bring:
- Comfortable clothing for walking along the river
- A notebook if you’d like to jot down stories or observations
- A bag lunch, as the event runs through lunchtime
Who Should Attend:
This workshop is open to anyone interested in food, culture, language, and the land — from educators and environmentalists to families and food enthusiasts. All are welcome!
Capacity: 30–50 participants
About the Facilitator:
Qwustenuxun is a passionate Indigenous Foods educator who grew up immersed in Salish culture with his late grandmother. A trained chef with more than 13 years of experience cooking for Cowichan elders, Qwustenuxun now works as a consultant, writer, and public speaker for various universities, ministries, and health authorities. He recently presented at the UN World Food Forum in Rome, delivered a TEDx talk on the power of Indigenous Foods, and serves as the chair of the Indigenous Advisory Council to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. When he’s not advocating for Indigenous food sovereignty, Qwustenuxun spends time on his family’s small hobby farm in Cowichan.
Cost: TBA
Come walk along the river, listen to stories, and reconnect with the land through the foods, language, and teachings of the Cowichan people.

Cari Burdett Music
2016 Winner, Vocalist of the Year, VIMA
2015 WCMA Nomination, World Album of the Year
‘Burdett’ style fuses jazz from the 40’s to art song and gypsy blending songs effortlessly in five languages that tap into deep veins of emotion.
British Columbia chanteuse, Cari Burdett, performs a timeless, genre-defying,
european fusion of opera, folk, jazz and world music. Burdett cites Edith Piaf, Joni Mitchell, Lhasa De Sela, Nina Simone, Maureen Forrester, Mecedes Sosa, Rhiannon Giddens as inuences. Her live show is musically moving from language to language, features her original compositions and sensual songs that express the vulnerable heart. The show is theatrical, virtuosic and at times impromptu.

About Cari
Cari Burdett lives through music, as anyone who has spent five minutes with her immediately understands. Her life’s path winds through a garden of music studies and teaching, performance and improvisation.
Through her rich musical background, Cari aims to instill joy and appreciation for music in her students, using her extensive knowledge and skills.
