Menopause is a transformative phase in a woman’s life, yet it is often misunderstood or minimized. However, this transition holds immense spiritual and creative potential, offering an opportunity to tap into new wisdom and strength. As Sharon Blackie writes in Hagitude, many traditional cultures viewed menopause as a time of great power. Lakota elder Paula Gunn Allen captures this with, “As the bleeding stops, the fire goes within,” symbolizing the deep creativity, wisdom, and empowerment that women access during this sacred time.
The Fire Within, a 5-month course co-created by Cari Burdett and Stephanie MacKay, is designed for women over 40 (or those approaching perimenopause), offering a held space to honor this sacred transition. Unlike typical approaches focusing on physical symptoms, this course delves into the spiritual, psychological, and creative dimensions of menopause. Participants are empowered through community, ceremony, myth, and creative practices to reconnect with their inner strength.
At its core, The Fire Within views menopause as a sacred rite of passage. Many ancient cultures marked significant life transitions with rituals that offered support, grounding and integration. This course recreates that sacred container, encouraging women to reflect on their journeys, release old patterns, and step confidently into their new roles as wise women.
A central part of the course is the exploration of ancient myths, especially the story of Persephone and Demeter. Guided by Stephanie MacKay, participants delve into this powerful myth, which mirrors the menopausal journey of descent, transformation, and return with newfound wisdom.
Voice and song also play a significant role in The Fire Within. As a seasoned vocal teacher, I help participants unlock their voices, releasing fears and discovering their healing songs. This process reconnects women with the power of their unique voices and their spiritual connection to nature.
Additionally, a solo overnight retreat offers participants a chance for personal reflection and connection with the land, deepening the transformation and integrating the teachings to embrace the next life phase with clarity and empowerment.
